For the player monster in the original Convict patch, see convict (player monster).

A convict, @, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, and is adapted from the original Convict patch against NetHack 3.4.3. The convict is a neutral player monster corresponding to the normally-chaotic Convict hero: they will have the role's appropriate rank title for their monster level, and they can reach level 30 like heroes can. Convicts are capable of performing sneak attacks.

A convict has two weapon attacks, with the second attack using any offhand weapons they have available. Like Convict heroes and other 'convict' monsters, they are created with intrinsic immunity to sickness, rather than possessing it intrinsically (as with e.g. barbarians and poison resistance)—they will gain poison resistance at a minimum of level 7 and automatic searching at 15. They boast basic prowess in martial combat and have a full base attack bonus of +1.0 to-hit per monster level.

Generation

Convicts are not generated randomly, and are normally created as peaceful towards chaotic heroes before specific adjustments are made. They are only a valid form for doppelgangers to polymorph into, and can only be targeted for genocide if a Convict hero reads a scroll of genocide—such a hero reading a cursed scroll while confused will instead create several convict monsters adjacent to themselves.

Convict corpses can generate in graveyards and within the Valley of the Dead. Convict statues can generate in cockatrice nests and on Medusa's Island. A Convict hero killed by HP damage from a cockatrice or chickatrice, or else killed by any form of stoning, will leave a named convict statue behind containing their inventory rather than a named ghost and named corpse if a bones file is created. Statues and figurines of convicts cannot be wished for by any means.

Live locations

Convicts can appear among the default pool of random prisoners (i.e. before ruler-specific rules are applied) that are kept in throne rooms, with twice the chance compared to other prisoners in that group—this is done to represent male and female player monsters with one entry each. They can also appear among the prisoners of the throne room on the Neutral Quest branch level.

Convicts can appear among the group of hostile player monsters that collectively constitute the second quest monster slot for Binders and make up 18175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Binder quest.

Hostile convicts can appear among the various player monsters placed on the Astral Plane during level creation.

Names

Named convicts that are placed outside of the Astral Plane are named for various characters from the cities of Waterdeep and Neverwinter within the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons, and consist of a first name and family name:

  • The masculine names that can be chosen from are "Aarin", "Desther", "Fenthick", "Kurth", "Baram", "Vengaul", "Floon", "Dalakhar", "Colstan", "Marune", "Rhinnom", "Ahmaergo", "Nar'l", "Noska", and "Ott".
  • The feminine names that can be chosen from are "Aribeth", "Sharwyn", "Nathyrra", "Aurora", "Avaereene", "Kerindra", "Shindia", "Arizza", "Xibrindas", and "Nakoto".

Inventory

A convict is always generated with a weapon that has a 34 chance of being given a flail, a 16 chance of being given a ball, and will otherwise be a spoon.

Convicts generated as prisoners will have the above items among their belongings that are normally placed in the chest near the throne, along with two specific items: a blessed +2 magic-resistant visored helmet that is made of iron named "Mask of Waterdeep", and a blessed +2 ornamental cope named "Masked Lord's Cope". Other convicts will always be given a striped shirt.

Convicts generated on the Astral Plane are subject to the same armor and weapon replacement odds as other player monsters.

Origin

A convict is a person found guilty of a crime and sentenced (usually to prison) by a court. Convicts are often also known as "prisoners" or "inmates" or by the slang term "con"; a common label for former convicts, especially those recently released from prison, is "ex-con" ("ex-convict"). Convicts are stereotypically draped in striped prison uniforms, and various forms of media also depict them with a ball and chain on their leg, based on a real-life practice which continued for some time into the 21st century.

The named armor associated with convicts in throne room prisons is derived from the Masked Lords of Waterdeep, a group in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons that also serves as the basis for many of the possible convict names. The Masked Lords of Waterdeep are the city's mysterious and predominantly anonymous ruling council, with the named items implying that those convicts have escaped from prison and possibly infiltrated said secret society in the setting of dNetHack and its derivatives.
