Barbarian (dNetHack monster)

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the barbarian, @, is significantly altered as a monster from its appearance in NetHack.

As with NetHack, the barbarian is a neutral human player monster corresponding to a Barbarian hero: they will have the role's appropriate rank title for their monster level, and they can reach level 30 like heroes can. Barbarians are capable of tracking foes.

A barbarian has two weapon attacks, with the second attack using any offhand weapons they have available and inflicting stun on the target if possible—like Barbarian heroes, they also gain two extra attacks (one of each type) at level 14 and another two at level 30. They possess poison resistance, and like a Barbarian hero and other 'barbarian' monsters, they will gain intrinsic speed at a minimum of level 7 and stealth at a minimum of level 15. They boast basic prowess in martial combat and have a full base attack bonus of +1.0 to-hit per monster level.

Generation

Barbarians are not generated randomly, and are normally created as peaceful towards neutral heroes before specific adjustments are made. They are only a valid form for doppelgangers to polymorph into, and can only be targeted for genocide if a Barbarian hero reads a scroll of genocide—such a hero reading a cursed scroll while confused will instead create several barbarian monsters adjacent to themselves.

Barbarian corpses can generate in graveyards and within the Valley of the Dead. Barbarian statues can generate in cockatrice nests and on Medusa's Island. A Barbarian hero killed by HP damage from a cockatrice or chickatrice, or else killed by any form of stoning, will leave a named barbarian statue behind containing their inventory rather than a named ghost and named corpse if a bones file is created. Statues and figurines of barbarians cannot be wished for by any means.

Live locations

Barbarians can appear among the default pool of random prisoners (i.e. before ruler-specific rules are applied) that are kept in throne rooms, with twice the chance compared to other prisoners in that group—this is done to represent male and female player monsters with one entry each. They can also appear among the prisoners of the throne room on the Neutral Quest branch level and the Castle, and may also appear among the prisoners of any throne room ruled by a deepest one, Aurumach Rilmani, vampire lady, or vampire lord—for deepest one and Aurumach Rilmani throne rooms, barbarians have twice the chance of appearing compared to other prisoners in those groups.

Barbarians can appear among the group of hostile player monsters that collectively constitute the second quest monster slot for Binders and make up 18175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Binder quest.

Hostile barbarians can appear among the various player monsters placed on the Astral Plane during level creation.

Names

Named barbarians that are placed outside of the Astral Plane are given various names borrowed from a sample list on Xoth.net that lists typical names for inhabitants of the different countries in the setting of Conan the Barbarian.

Inventory

A barbarian is always generated with a helmet, chain mail, a pair of gloves, a pair of high boots, and some torches. They have a roughly 12 chance of being given either a two-handed sword or a battle axe, with roughly equal probability.

Barbarians generated as prisoners in the Castle will have the above items among their belongings that are placed in the chest near the throne.

Barbarians generated on the Astral Plane are subject to the same armor and weapon replacement odds as other player monsters.
