A hedrow zombie, Z, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The hedrow zombie is an always-male form of zombie drow that is distinct from other derived undead drow, though it naturally shares many traits with zombies.
A hedrow zombie is amphibious, unbreathing, mindless and lacks HP regeneration like a "traditional" zombie in dNetHack and its variants, but he can be seen via infravision, and also has darkvision much like a living drow does. Hedrow zombies can follow a hero to other levels if they are close enough. A hedrow zombie has 1 point of natural AC and several slots of natural DR: 6 points each for the upper body and lower body slots, and 2 each for the head, hands and legs.
Hedrow zombies have a fiery claw attack, as well as a passive attack that inflicts physical damage via barbs. They resist blunt and piercing damage, but are vulnerable to slashing damage and weak to iron like most drow, and they also possess cold resistance, sleep resistance, poison resistance, drain resistance, and death resistance like most undead.
Hedrow zombies can be warded by a fourfold-or-better Elder Elemental Eye.
Generation
Randomly-generated hedrow zombies are always hostile, and may appear in small groups.
Dokkalfar eternal matriarchs are often generated with a group of hedrow zombies accompanying them.
The hedrow zombie is the first quest monster for the Hedrow Noble, and makes up 96⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Hedrow Noble quest—this also applies for hedrow Priests, Rogues, Rangers, and Wizards that have turned traitor. Hedrow zombies also appear among the random Z that are part of the second quest monster class for traitor hedrow heroes and make up 6⁄175 of the monsters generated on their quest.
Hedrow zombies appear among the random Z that are part of the first quest monster class for Priests and make up 24⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Priest quest. They also among the random Z that are part of the first quest monster class for half-dragon Noblewomen and make up 24⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Half-dragon Noblewoman quest.
Hedrow zombies have a 1⁄10 chance of generating with a black signet ring bearing their faction's symbol.
Hedrow zombies leave behind an aged male drow corpse upon death. Zapping a wand of undead turning or casting the turn undead spell at a corpse left by a hedrow zombie will revive it as a hedrow zombie.
