In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, Elder Elemental Eye is a ward which scares elemental, fungoid creatures, dragons, undead, energetic creatures, and planar creatures when engraved on the floor. The elder elemental eye can be reinforced up to 7-fold, with each level of reinforcement taking 10 strokes to draw. With a fast engraving tool each reinforcement takes 1 turn, or 5 turns with a slow engraving tool. It gains no secondary effects at higher levels of reinforcement.

Generation

Scrolls of elder elemental eye make up 536 (~13.8%) of all randomly generated scrolls of warding. Writing a scroll of elder elemental eye with a magic marker costs 8 charges. Scrolls of elder elemental eye can be wished for.

Rings have a base 112 (~8.33%) chance of being generated with a ward-engraving. 124 (~4.17%) of those rings will be generated with a elder elemental eye ward engraving. When wishing for a elder elemental eye engraved ring, if that ring would be generated with an engraving, it will have its engraving changed to an elder elemental eye.

The elder elemental eye appears in level 2 spellbooks and above. The odds of a spellbook containing an elder elemental eye ward are:

  • Level 2 spellbooks: 116 chance (6.25%)
  • Level 3 spellbooks: 115 chance (~6.66%)
  • Level 4 spellbooks: 112 chance (~8.33%)
  • Level 5 spellbooks: 14 chance (25%)
  • Level 6 spellbooks: 19 chance (~11.1%)
  • Level 7 spellbooks: 112 chance (~8.33%)

The elder elemental eye, along with many other wards, can be learned from the Necronomicon's option to "Study up on ancient warding signs".

Troubadours start the game with knowledge of the elder elemental eye.

Spellbooks given to roles at the start the game have a 18 (12.5%) chance of being warded with the elder elemental eye, in which case the hero will start the game with knowledge of the ward.

Messages

The elder elemental eye is mentioned by name in the drow Healer quest and the drow racial quest:

Drow Healer quest:

"This rod was gifted to Eclavdra while she served Zuggtmoy, demon
lady of rot and corruption, then consort of the Elder Elemental
Eye, the chained god Tharizdun, who seeks to consume all the
worlds and all the gods thereof.
Evlavdra and Zuggtmoy both betrayed the Eye, and each other, having
planned from the beginning to use it for their own ends. Any
interaction with the Chained One is perilous, however, and its
service is not easy to foreswear. It was likely Tharizdun who
sent the black tentacles that claimed Eclavdra as she lay dying. [...]

Drow shared quest:

Eclavdra is fortunate to have been captured
by the Eddergud, for her soul is marked by Tharizdun, and
she was being followed by a spawn of Shothragot.

The shattered ziggurat cultists have special dialogue which references Nudzirath:

Derettash neeb evah sdog eth fo staruggiz eth!
"The ziggurats of the gods have been shattered!"
Hgin si dne eth!
The end is nigh!"
Dlrow eth fo esab eth ta Erutcarf a si ereth!
There is a fracture at the base of the world!"
Uoy emusnoc llash Erutcarf eth!
The fracture shall consume you!"
Lla emusnoc llash Erutcarf eth!
"The fracture shall consume all!"
Gnidne si Noitatnemal fo emit eth!
"The time of lamentations is ending!"
Snruter Tsol eth!
"The lost returns!"
Nrober neeb sah Tsol eth!
"The lost has been reborn!"
