A death knight, L, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The death knight is a form of skeletal humanoid lich that is strong, has enhanced regeneration, has infravision, and they will pick up weapons, magical items and other objects that they come across. A death knight is covetous and capable of warping, and desires the Amulet of Yendor, the Book of the Dead and the other invocation items, and the quest artifact of the hero's current role. Death knights have 14 points of natural AC and 7 points of natural DR.

Death knights have two weapon attacks that deal physical damage, as well as a touch attack that can deal cold damage similar to other liches. Death knights possess fire resistance, cold resistance, sleep resistance, and poison resistance, along with drain resistance and death resistance like other undead. Death knights resist slashing and piercing damage, boast expert prowess in martial combat, gain a full base attack bonus of +1 to-hit per monster level, and also gain a hit dice-based scaling bonus for physical damage.

Death knights are poisonous to eat and can grant fire resistance or cold resistance when eaten, which primarily comes up if they are subjected to the spirit Ahazu (whose Abduction ability ignores the detrimental effects of eaten monsters).

Generation

Death knights are only randomly generated in Gehennom, and normally-created ones are always hostile.

A death knight and three skeletons appear within one of the rooms in the lair of Demogorgon during level creation if his dwelling appears as the third Abyss level.

The first lillend that is placed in the lair of Lamashtu during level creation will always have a mask of a death knight.

Death knights are generated with different inventories depending on their location.

Death knights do not leave a corpse upon death.
