In some variants with object materials systems, the leather cloak may be renamed to a plain cloak or simply a cloak.
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, various cloaks and other items retain their MC values from NetHack 3.4.3, and many of them can be upgraded or produced by upgrading another cloak - this makes the leather cloak much less desirable unless a character already has MC2 or better, e.g. from a cornuthaum or mithril-coat.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the leather cloak is simply known as a "cloak", with its material always appended to its name - a cloak grants 0 base AC, 2 base DR and MC1 while worn.
Binders that do not start the game with a particular inventory will begin with a leather cloak, including incantifier Binders. Human, incantifier, vampire, and elven Nobles start each game with a +1 leather cloak. Non-drow Troubadours start each game with a +1 leather cloak.
Mayor Cummerbund is always generated with a leather cloak, and player monster exiles will always generate with a leather cloak.
SpliceHack
In SpliceHack, the item is renamed to a "plain cloak".
A plain cloak can be combined with an amulet of guarding at a furnace to create a cloak of protection.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, the item is known simply as a "cloak" with its material appended to its name (e.g., a dragonhide cloak). Its base material is leather.
The Paladin always generates with a regular cloak, and cultists have an effective 4⁄15 chance of generating with a regular cloak. Mercenaries that can wear cloaks and do not generate with a racial cloak have a 1⁄2 chance of generating with a regular cloak, and gnolls have a 1⁄5 chance of generating with a regular cloak.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, the Ninja starts each game with a +1 leather cloak. Bards also start each game with a +1 leather cloak, as in dNetHack.
The Crown Royal Cloak is an artifact leather cloak that is the first sacrifice gift for Drunks.
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, the item is renamed to a "plain cloak".
Upgrading a plain cloak will produce a mummy wrapping, and vice versa.
