A potion of hallucination is a type of potion that appears in NetHack.

Generation

Wizards will never be given a potion of hallucination as any of the three random potions in their starting inventory.[1][2]

Potions of hallucination make up 125 (4%) of all randomly-generated potions. General stores and liquor emporiums can sell potions of hallucination.

Mixing a potion of booze with a potion of gain level or a potion of gain energy creates a potion of hallucination.[3]

Description

Main article: Hallucination

Quaffing the potion causes hallucination, with the duration dependent on the potion's beatitude: blessed potions cause the hero to hallucinate for 300–499 turns, uncursed potions cause hallucination for 600–799 turns, and cursed potions cause hallucination for 900–1099 turns.[4] Dipping a unicorn horn into a potion of hallucination turns it into uncursed water.[5] Mixing a potion of healing, extra healing, or full healing with a potion of hallucination will create water.

Inhaling vapors from a potion of hallucination will print a cosmetic message, followed by prompting the player to type-name the potion.[6] Other than that, the thrown potion has no effect, whether on the character or on a monster.

Hallucination resistance, which is only granted by wielding Grayswandir, suppresses the effects of the potion of hallucination instead of blocking or curing it outright.

Drinking a non-cursed potion of hallucination may now give enlightenment, which exercises wisdom; wielding Grayswandir also blocks this effect. The chance of gaining enlightenment is 49 for a blessed potion and 16 for an uncursed potion. This is implemented from xNetHack.

Strategy

Potions of hallucination tend to have relatively few uses, as the property grants almost no benefits, and they are generally considered prime candidates for dilution. However, hallucinating while being hit by a touch of death prevents it from killing the hero, which can make the potions very situational life-savers against hostile high-level spellcasters for a hero that has not yet obtained magic resistance.

The blessed potion can be an occasional source of enlightenment, whose other sources are generally rare unless the hero finds a wand of enlightenment.

History

The potion of hallucination first appears in NetHack 1.3d.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, roles that receive random potions will never start with a potion of hallucination.[7]

The Lawful Quest has a 25 chance of generating a cursed potion of hallucination among the items found within the Chamber of Junk at level creation.

Hallucination in SLASH'EM has the same effects as in NetHack and additionally distorts items in the hero's inventory and on their square are standing on, which makes randomly quaffing potions far more hazardous—the hero's god still considers it a minor problem for purposes of prayer. In addition to unicorn horns and potions of extra healing or full healing, medical kits can also cure hallucination, though their reliability depends heavily on the hero's role—be sure to have the inventory letter of any remedy items memorized.

The potion of hallucination also has a less fringe benefit when quaffed: asking a shopkeeper to uncurse an item while hallucinating has a chance of blessing it instead, providing a means of doing so without breaking atheist conduct.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, weapons and black signet rings can be dipped into a potion of hallucination to apply a hallucinating poison. Weapons poisoned this way become ergot-coated and apply their poison on hit, while signet rings become ergot injecting and apply the poison when the hero performs an unarmed attack while wearing the ring without gloves.

A potion of hallucination is generated in the hidden closet on the home level of the Madman quest at level creation.

Quaffing a potion of hallucination has the same effects as in NetHack, and quaffing a cursed potion reduces insight and sanity each by one point if they are above zero, and also abuses intelligence and wisdom.

Hyposprays can be used to apply hallucination ampules (the future equivalent of potions) to other monsters.

xNetHack

In xNetHack, the Oracle has a 23 chance of generating with a potion of hallucination.

Violet fungi corpses can be used to brew a potion of hallucination by dipping them in fruit juice, which eventually turns the juice into the potion.

Drinking a non-cursed potion of hallucination may grant enlightenment alongside hallucination, which is blocked by sources of hallucination resistance (i.e. wielding Grayswandir); this exercises wisdom and has a 49 chance of occurring when quaffing a blessed potion, or a 16 chance when quaffing an uncursed potion.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, extraplanar merchants in the City of Brass have a 12 chance of generating with a potion of hallucination among their additional items.

notdNetHack

In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, in addition to dNetHack details, the vapors from a potion of hallucination cause hallucination for 2-6 turns.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, intelligent monsters can be generated with the potion of hallucination as an offensive item, and will throw them at targets if possible.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, the Undertaker quest has the same layout as the Lawful Quest, including the 25 chance of generating a cursed potion of hallucination in the Chamber of Junk at level creation.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the Oracle has a 23 chance of generating with a potion of hallucination as in xNetHack.

The Lawful Quest has a 25 chance of generating a cursed potion of hallucination within the Chamber of Junk at level creation, as in SLASH'EM.

Quaffing the potion of hallucination behaves as it does in xNetHack. As in EvilHack intelligent monsters can generate with the potion of hallucination, and will use it as an offensive item.

Violet fungi corpses can be used to brew potions of hallucination by dipping them in fruit juice, as in xNetHack.

Encyclopedia entry

All at once, and without further warning, my reason forsook me
altogether, and I started from Fr. Moffitt's house to go to my
boarding place. The sidewalks were to me one mass of living,
moving, howling, and ferocious animals. Bears, lions, tigers,
wolves, jaguars, leopards, pumas -- all wild beasts of all climes
-- were frothing at the mouth around me and striving to get to me.
Recollect that while all this was hallucination, it was just as
real as if it had been an undeniable and awful reality.
