In NetHack, the number nine (or 9) is not used to represent anything by default. However, it can still solve the following purposes:

  • 9 and the other number keys can be used to specify a numeric prefix for a command or in a menu.
  • If numpad movement is on, press 9 to move north-west.
  • Some players also change the "monsters" option in the options file to utilize unused symbols like 8 for certain purposes

Historical uses

From NetHack 1.3d to NetHack 2.3e, the giant used the 9 glyph.
