There is no ¥ in ASCII!
¥ is the symbol for Japanese yen, analogous to $ for the dollar or the zorkmid of NetHack. The character is not part of ASCII, and requires Unicode or another character set that supports it to be displayed; it does not appear in most curses interface library software, such as the typical tty-Unix game).
Dudley's dungeon
While no monster, item or other square in NetHack appears onscreen as a ¥, Dudley's dungeon has put the symbol to some use:
- 22 September 2005: A marilith that is killed drops a ¥-shirt, rather than a T-shirt (which would not fit a marilith's six arms).
- 27 June 2006: The ¥ represents a "nonexistent" monster that is among the failed candidates for Dudley's sidekick.
- 30 November 2006: Dudley has an 'imagine spot' involving methods to improve Vlad the Impaler; one such idea is "Vlad the impossible", represented by a ¥.
- 2009 August 26 (sadowl): Dudley finds yen rather than gold in a vault while playing as a Samurai.
