In NetHack, the number eight (or 8) is not used to represent anything by default. However, it can be used along with the other number keys to specify a numeric prefix for a command or in a menu.
Some players also change the "monsters" option in the options file to utilize unused symbols like the 8 glyph for certain purposes, e.g. usually to represent ghosts in place of the blank space, or .
Historical uses
In NetHack 2.2a and NetHack 2.3e, Medusa used the 8 glyph.
