A frost giant, H, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. The frost giant is a giant humanoid that has infravision and can be seen via infravision. Like all giants, frost giants will seek out gems, weapons and other items to pick up, and can move over boulders, pick them up and throw them.

A frost giant has a single weapon attack, and possesses cold resistance.

Eating a frost giant corpse or tin has a 13 chance (33%) of granting cold resistance, and an independent 12 chance (50%) of increasing a character's strength.

The attacks of frost giants and other sufficiently large monsters can inflict knockback, sending targets flying one or more squares.

Frost giants and other large humanoids can wear mummy wrappings.

Generation

Frost giants may generate as peaceful towards chaotic characters, and can generate in small groups of two to four. They will not be randomly generated in Gehennom.

Frost giants may appear among the hostile giant humanoids generated in throne rooms at dungeon levels 13 and below, and can also appear among the monsters randomly generated by looting a throne while confused and carrying gold (provided there is no chest on the level).[1]

Frost giants may appear among the random H that are part of the second quest monster class for Cavepeople, and make up 6175 (~3.42%) of the monsters randomly generated on the Caveman quest. Frost giants may also appear among the random H that are part of the second quest monster class for Valkyries, and make up 6175 (~3.42%) of the monsters that are randomly generated on the Valkyrie quest.

Frost giants have a 12 chance (50%) of being generated with either a boulder or a club with equal probability, and an independent chance of being generated with a small assortment of gems.[2][3] They are eligible for offensive items, defensive items, and miscellaneous items.

Strategy

Frost giants are slightly stronger than fire giants, with slightly more AC and MR score, and can generate with dangerous wands and potions like other giants. Fortunately, most characters can deal with groups of through the same standard methods.

While frost giant meat is likely to grant intrinsic cold resistance, many characters will have obtained the intrinsic from other earlier sources such as blue jellies and winter wolf cubs, though their corpses and tins will still be used to increase strength regardless.

Knockback can make frost giants and other large monsters exceedingly dangerous if the player character is positioned between them and a hazard, such as pools of water or lava.

History

The frost giant first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, frost giants may appear among the random H generated in giant courts and the Giant Caverns.

A peaceful frost giant named Goliath appears as an assistant in the black market.

All of the above information also applies to SlashTHEM.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, frost giants can generate in Sheol.

A peaceful frost giant named Goliath appears as an assistant in the variant's black market.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, frost giants are neutral-aligned and vulnerable to iron, and are capable of swimming. They are always generated with a broadsword, helmet and scale mail made to fit their size - this is independent of the existing chance of being generated with a club, due to an oversight in the code.

Frost giants may appear among the court of a titan-ruled throne room.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, a peaceful frost giant named Goliath appears as an assistant in the variant's black market.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, frost giants are capable of entering berserker rages, increasing their damage but making them more likely to hit monsters around them besides their intended target.

Frost giants are among the monsters randomly generated in the Ice Queen's Realm: each floor below the top floor generates a frost giant at level creation, and several frost giants may occupy the treasure zoos inside Kathryn the Ice Queen's castle.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, frost giants can go berserk as in EvilHack.

Encyclopedia entry

Giants have always walked the earth, though they are rare in these times. They range in size from little over nine feet to a towering twenty feet or more. The larger ones use huge boulders as weapons, hurling them over large distances. All types of giants share a love for men - roasted, boiled, or fried. Their table manners are legendary.
