The angelic being is a monster class that appears in NetHack, and is represented by the uppercase A glyph (A). Angelic beings are designated internally by the macro S_ANGEL.[1]

The monster class contains the following monsters:[2]

Common traits

All angelic beings are lawful with the exception of Angels: though an Angel's default alignment is lawful, Angels that serve as the minion of a god will have the same alignment as that god.

Angelic beings are strong and inediate monsters that are considered nasty, have infravision, can be seen with infravision, and can follow the hero to other levels if they are adjacent. Angelic beings can fly with the exception of the Aleax, and can all see invisible except for the couatl. Angelic beings ignore the effects of Elbereth as well as occupied sanctuary.

Except for the ki-rin, angelic beings possess poison resistance.

Ki-rin also possess poison resistance.

Generation

Randomly-generated angelic beings are likely to be created peaceful towards lawful characters that have good alignment record, with the exception of Angels: Angels that serve the same god as the hero, or else are "renegade" servants of other gods are likely to be peaceful if the hero has good alignment record; Angels that serve different gods from the hero or are "renegade" servants of the hero's god will always be hostile. Angelic beings will never be generated randomly in Gehennom.

Humanoid angelic beings are generated with an uncursed erodeproof +0 large shield 34 of the time, and an uncursed +0 shield of reflection otherwise, and their weapon will be a blessed erodeproof long sword of an enchantment from +0 to +3, with a 15 chance of the sword being made into either Demonbane or Sunsword if neither artifact has been generated.[3] A humanoid angelic being that is a lord to their kind, i.e. an Archon, will always generate with a shield of reflection, and their long sword will always be made into an artifact if possible.

Angelic beings do not leave a corpse upon death.

Demonbane's base item is changed to a mace, so no angelic being can generate with it.

Tame angelic beings can be gifted as minions to lawful characters via sacrifice or prayer, except for Angels and Aleaxes.

UnNetHack

UnNetHack adds some new angelic beings to the monster class:

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, there are three separate monster classes for angels and minions of each alignment. Lawful angels and minions consist of the angelic beings from NetHack alongside several other monsters, and both lawful and neutral angels and minions use different glyphs - chaotic angels and minions retain the A glyph.

The three alignments of angelic being or minion are listed below:

Encyclopedia entry

He answered and said unto them, he that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the weeds are the children of the wicked one; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. [...] So shall it be at the end of the world; the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
