j represents a jabberwock, the sole member of its monster class in vanilla NetHack; the vorpal jabberwock is an unused monster of the same class that still exists in the game code.

J is also used as a direction key:
- Press j to move south if numpad movement is off
- Press shift + j to move far south if numpad movement is off

UnNetHack is one of the variants that uses the vorpal jabberwock, J, derived directly from the unused monster in NetHack.

SLASH'EM is another variant that makes use of the vorpal jabberwock, and introduces other new creatures that use the j and J glyphs:
