In NetHack, the letter R serves the following purposes:

Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, the giant rat uses the r glyph, and the robber uses the R glyph - in Hack for PDP-11, the R glyph is given to the rust monster. Both monsters retain their glyphs for their appearance in Hack 1.0, and continue to use it throughout each version of the game to the modern day.

In NetHack 3.4.3 and previous versions, including some variants based on those versions, shift + R can only be used to take off an accessory, e.g. a ring or an amulet.

Variants

SLASH'EM
