In NetHack, the hash mark (#) serves the following purposes:
- Press # to enter a specific extended command. Note that "#" cannot be the first character of the name of any NetHackWiki article, requiring it to be omitted from the title of extended command articles.
- On the skill screen, # denotes a skill that cannot be #enhanced any further.
- # can represent one of many dungeon features:
- In the inventory, # is used as an overflow character for items that are picked up when every other inventory letter is in use - in practice, this typically occurs with a picked-up loadstone, which ignores the inventory letter limit that would prevent you picking up most additional items. Boulders picked up while in the form of a giant or titan are also given hash mark slots in the inventory if all other letters are in use.

dNetHack
In dNetHack, Tobiume is capable of stealing weapons from monsters and adding them to your inventory: if all other inventory letters are in use, these weapons are given # slots as normal.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, your wallet uses a lettered inventory slot like other items, including using # in the absence of any available inventory letters.
