Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, goblins use the g glyph, while grabbers use the G glyph. In Hack for PDP-11, the g glyph is given to the gelatinous cube, while the G glyph is given to the gnome. Both monsters retain the glyph for their appearance in Hack 1.0.

The gelatinous cube continues to use the g glyph through NetHack 2.3e—in NetHack 3.0.0, it is moved to b with the other blobs. The gnome retains its glyph, and NetHack 3.0.0 adds the other gnomish monsters to the monster class.
