In NetHack, the backtick symbol (`) serves the following purposes:

  • ` represents boulders by default. This can be changed with the boulder option, with the 0 glyph, 0, being a popular choice.

Historical uses

In NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions, including some variants based on these versions, ` also represented statues. Starting in NetHack 3.6.0, statues of monsters instead use that monster's glyph.
