In NetHack, the backtick symbol (`) serves the following purposes:

  • ` represents boulders by default. This can be changed with the boulder option, with the 0 glyph (0) being a popular choice.

Historical uses

In NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions, including some variants based on these versions, ` also represented statues of monsters. Starting in NetHack 3.6.0, statues instead use the glyph of the depicted monster.

Some variants based on NetHack 3.4.3 continue to use ` to represent statues.

SLASH'EM

SLASH'EM uses the same glyphs for statues as NetHack 3.4.3.
