In NetHack, the backtick symbol (`) serves the following purposes:

• ` represents boulders by default. This can be changed with the boulder option, with the 0 glyph, 0, being a popular choice.

• Pressing ` opens up the discoveries menu, which lets you view what items you have identified in each object class, whether formally or by type-name.

Historical uses

In NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions, including some variants based on these versions, ` also represented statues. Starting in NetHack 3.6.0, statues of monsters instead use that monster's glyph.

Variants

Some variants based on NetHack 3.4.3 continue to use ` to represent statues.

SLASH'EM

SLASH'EM uses the same glyphs for statues as NetHack 3.4.3.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, ` is also used for statue monsters, a new monster class. The glyph is used by the following monsters:
