Barbarian/EvilHack
In EvilHack, the Barbarian is one of the roles from NetHack that is available to the hero.
Barbarians can be humans, dwarves, orcs, giants, centaurs, tortles, draugr, or vampires, and can start as neutral or chaotic.
Starting equipment
Each Barbarian starts with the following equipment:
- either of two weapon sets (with equal probability):
- a +0 two-handed sword and a +0 axe
- a +0 battle-axe and a +0 short sword
- +0 ring mail
- 1-2 uncursed food rations
- an oil lamp (1⁄6 chance or 16.67%)
The following racial conditions also apply:
- Draugr Barbarians are given 7 eggs in place of food rations.
- Dwarven Barbarians are given a dwarvish short sword in place of a short sword, and have a 1⁄4 chance of starting with a +0 pick-axe.
- Giant Barbarians are given a helmet in place of ring mail, and may also start with valuable gems like other giants.
- Orcish Barbarians are given an orcish short sword in place of a short sword, as well as a set of orcish ring mail in place of ring mail, and are given two additional stacks of 1-2 random comestibles.
- Tortle Barbarians are given a rustproof +0 trident in place of their starting two-handed weapon, and have a 1⁄4 chance of starting with an oilskin sack.
- Vampire Barbarians are given potions of blood in place of food rations.
Barbarians start with knowledge of all non-magical weapons and armor, in addition to any applicable racial equipment.
The Barbarian's default starting pet is a little dog named Idefix.
Intrinsics
Barbarians gain the following intrinsic properties upon reaching the given experience levels:
- Level 1: poison resistance
- Level 7: speed
- Level 15: stealth
Attributes
The Barbarian's starting attributes are distributed as follows:
| Attributes | Strength | Dexterity | Constitution | Intelligence | Wisdom | Charisma | Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum attributes | 16 | 15 | 16 | 7 | 7 | 6 | 8 |
| Distribution percentages | 30% | 20% | 30% | 6% | 7% | 7% | |
| Mean w/ standard deviation (human) | 18/00.89±1.34 | 16.72±1.01 | 17.69±0.59 | 7.60±0.87 | 7.69±0.91 | 6.60±0.87 |
The means and standard deviations were calculated via simulation, whose source code can be found on the role article's talk page, and assumes that all given roles are played as humans—non-human races will have different attribute means as a result of different attribute maximums.
Skills
Barbarians have the following skills available to them:
| Barbarian skills | |
|---|---|
| Max | Skills |
| Basic |
|
| Skilled |
|
| Expert |
|
| Master |
|
Barbarians start with Basic skill in axes and bare-handed combat, along with either short swords or two-handed swords depending on their starting weapons—tortle Barbarians start with Basic skill in tridents and bare-handed combat, along with either short swords or axes depending on their secondary weapon. They use the intelligence stat to cast spells, and their special spell is cause fear. Draugr Barbarians are restricted in all spell skills, since they lack the ability to cast spells.
Special rules
The barbarian's attack messages replace most instances of "hit" with "smite" (e.g. "You smite the goblin!"), but this is flavor text with no gameplay effect.
Rank titles
The status line displays one of the following ranks for the corresponding experience levels:
- XL 1–2: Plunderer/Plunderess
- XL 3–5: Pillager
- XL 6–9: Bandit
- XL 10–13: Brigand
- XL 14–17: Raider
- XL 18–21: Reaver
- XL 22–25: Slayer

Gods
The Barbarian pantheon is based on the Hyborian pantheon from Robert E. Howard's Conan mythos. Their first sacrifice gift is Cleaver.
Quest
The Barbarian's quest sees them fight Thoth Amon for The Ring of P'hul, an artifact ancient ring. While carried, The Ring of P'hul grants immunity to sickness, and a hero that puts on The Ring of P'hul gains free action from the base item type along with magic resistance while it is worn.
