For a dungeon space or square, see Square.

In NetHack, a blank space serves the following purposes:

  •   represents ghosts:
    •   ghost
    •   shade
    • Some players use the SYMBOLS option to give ghosts and shades a different appearance, such as X or 8.
  • A space also represents a dark part of a room, solid rock, air or an unexplored part of the dungeon.
  • Press space at the --More-- prompt to get the next messages or screen.
  • The rest_on_space option causes the command space to rest, the same as .. This is generally viewed as extremely dangerous, as one too many presses of space as messages pass by can cause YASD.

Variants

Some variants of NetHack change the glyph of ghosts for better visibility.

SLASH'EM

SLASH'EM adds one new monster that uses a blank space as a glyph:

xNetHack

In xNetHack, the ghost monster class is merged into the W wraith class to avoid using punctuation for monster glyphs and make them more visible.

SpliceHack

SpliceHack adds a new monster that uses a blank space as a glyph:

EvilHack

EvilHack also adds spectres to the ghost monster class, which still uses a blank space as a glyph.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, the ghost monster class instead uses the 8 glyph.
