A potion of midas is a type of magical potion that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. It will always appear as an "aureate potion" when unidentified.
Generation
Potions of midas do not randomly generate but may be wished for or found in bones.
Croesus is always generated with 2 potions of midas.
Description
Quaffing a potion of midas is fatal and will turn the hero into a gold statue in 8 turns if they have free action, or in just 6 if they do not. Throwing the potion at a monster or hitting them with it stones struck monsters that do not have stoning resistance, similar to a thrown potion of blood from a monster with petrifying blood, and will instantly kill them by transforming them into a gold statue, even if they would normally not leave a corpse. Golems aren't killed by the potion and instead turn into gold golems, an effect that extends to the hero if they are affected by the potion while polymorphed into one. Aurumach Rilmani and radiant pyramid are also immune to the potion of midas' stoning effect, despite not possessing stoning resistance.
The potion's most notable property comes from its interaction with dipping: when any item is dipped into a potion of midas, it has its base-material changed to gold, fixing all levels of erosion it previously had, if any.
Mercurial items that are dipped into a midas potion revert to their base material after 8–64 turns. The mercurial artifacts The Skies Reflected and The Amalgamated Skies amalgamate metals they have been temporarily turned into, retaining the metal's beneficial properties even after they return to their original material. While a mercurial artifact is temporarily made of gold the Silver Flame's material-changing boons may be applied to it, though only the last material it was remade into is amalgamated when reverting to their mercurial form. Only gold, iron, green-steel, silver, platinum, mithril, copper and lead can be amalgamated, though currently not all of these materials can feasibly be obtained.
Inhaling the vapors from a potion of midas has no effect.
