In NetHack, the letter F serves the following purposes:

History

In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, the fog cloud uses the f glyph, while the faker uses the F glyph. The fog cloud retains its glyph in Hack for PDP-11 and Hack 1.0, while the F glyph is given to the freezing sphere, and both monsters use their glyphs from these releases to NetHack 2.3e.

In NetHack 3.0.0, the feline and fungi or mold monster classes are introduced, and new and existing monsters moved to each class are given their current glyphs: the fog cloud is moved to its current glyph in the vortex monster class, v, while the freezing sphere is moved to its current glyph in the eye or sphere monster class, e.
