In NetHack, the letter N serves the following purposes:

  • n represents a nymph:
    • n wood nymph
    • n water nymph
    • n mountain nymph
  • N represents a naga:
    • N red naga
    • N black naga
    • N golden naga
    • N guardian naga
    • N red naga hatchling
    • N black naga hatchling
    • N golden naga hatchling
    • N guardian naga hatchling
  • It is also used as a direction key if numpad movement is off:
    • Press n to move south-east.
    • Press shift + n to move far south-east.

Historical uses

From Hack 1.0 to NetHack 2.3e, nymphs used the N glyph. In NetHack 3.0.0, nagas were introduced and represented by the N glyph, while the nymph was split into its three subtypes and moved to the n glyph.

Variants

Many variants introduce Aphrodite, a new unique monster that use the n glyph.
