Historical uses
In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, the floor fiend uses the ; glyph—in PDP-11 Hack, also based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, the giant eel uses the ; glyph. The glyph then goes unused until Hack 1.0.2, which reintroduces the giant eel, and it retains the glyph for every version afterward up to NetHack 2.2a. In NetHack 2.3e, the giant eel is replaced by the electric eel.
In NetHack 3.0.0, the giant eel is re-added to the bestiary again, and both it and the electric eel make up the monster class of sea monsters alongside the newly-introduced kraken. The jellyfish, piranha and shark are introduced in NetHack 3.3.0.
