In NetHack, the apostrophe (') serves the following purposes:

Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, a variant of Jay Fenlason's Hack, the ghost uses the ' glyph; in Hack for PDP-11, the glyph is given to the lurker above. Hack 1.0 moves the lurker above to the tilde glyph, ~, and Hack 1.0.1 moves it back to ', where it remains from this version to NetHack 2.3e. In NetHack 3.0.0, the golems are introduced and the lurker above is moved to t with the trapper.
