Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, a variant of Jay Fenlason's Hack, the neevil used the n glyph, while the nepto used the N glyph; in the variant Hack for PDP-11, the n glyph is instead given to the neo-otyugh, while the N glyph was given to the nymph.

From Hack 1.0 to NetHack 2.3e, nymphs used the N glyph, while nurses used the n glyph. In NetHack 3.0.0, nagas were introduced and represented by the N glyph, while the nymph was split into its three subtypes and moved to the n glyph; nurses were moved to the @ glyph with other human and elven monsters.

Variants

Many variants introduce Aphrodite, a new unique monster that use the n glyph.
