In NetHack, the letter O serves the following purposes:

Historical uses

In hack121, orcs used the o glyph as in modern NetHack, while oxidizers used the O glyph; in Hack for PDP-11, and from Hack 1.0 to NetHack 2.3e, orcs instead used the O glyph, while owlbears used the o glyph. In NetHack 3.0.0, the ogres were introduced and given the O glyph, while the various new and returning orcs were moved to the o glyph; owlbears were moved to H giant humanoids, then subsequently reclassified as Y apelike creatures in NetHack 3.1.0.
