Contents
Availability
NetHack 3.7.0 is currently available as development source code on Github. No official binaries exist as of yet, because this version is still in development and subject to change. A recent build of it is also available for play on the Hardfought public server.
Significant changes
Notable changes in NetHack 3.7.0 include:
Level generation
- Themed rooms generate in the Dungeons of Doom.
- Gehennom levels are significantly more interesting, with terrain variation, lava, some cavernous filler levels and random prefabricated areas.
- Most special levels can generate mirrored: horizontally, vertically, or both at once.
- Two new Big Room designs.
- The Castle will no longer generate master liches or arch-liches at level creation.
- A number of extra beneficial items, especially potions of healing, generate in the early game.
Monsters
- Four new monsters: displacer beast, gold dragon, baby gold dragon and genetic engineer.
- Mind flayers no longer cause amnesia, though they still drain intelligence.
- You can displace peaceful monsters aside, like you can do with a pet, with some exceptions (shopkeepers, priests, quest leaders, the Oracle, and guards). Sleeping and paralyzed monsters cannot be displaced.
- You can no longer displace pets (or peacefuls) into hazardous terrain or traps, or out of a trap they are trapped in.
- Any level a demon lord is on, within Gehennom, is a no-teleport level. Their lairs are no longer permanently no-teleport, and permit teleportation after the demon is gone from that level.
- Monsters can remove items from non-locked containers. They can also pick up and carry around containers, notably the chest in the Castle containing the wand of wishing. Monsters with keys can additionally unlock and open locked containers.
- Monsters that are scared but which you have cornered will still attack.
- Summon nasties can no longer create monsters of equal or higher difficulty than the caster (preventing e.g. arch-liches or Archons from summoning more of themselves).
- Monsters can zap a wand of undead turning at you in order to animate corpses in your inventory.
- Monsters can gain a limited set of intrinsics (resistances) from eating corpses like the hero can.
- Peaceful demon lords that become hostile if you wield Excalibur also become hostile if you wield Demonbane.
- Many of the non-unique demons gain special properties, passive effects, or abilities.
- Pets will not eat corpses that make them polymorph, unless they are starving or on the verge of becoming untame.
- You can obtain temporary intrinsic acid resistance and stoning resistance by eating certain monsters.
- Conflict requires the affected monster to see the hero, and higher charisma increases the odds it will affect a monster.
- Spheres' active explosion attack is now a real explosion which hits multiple squares and can destroy items.
- Covetous monsters may warp to either the upstairs or the downstairs to heal.
- Most monsters no longer death drop food items.
- Monster species that would reasonably be expected to have gendered names now visibly distinguish between individuals of different genders (dwarf ladies in addition to dwarf lords, etc.)
Objects
- Two new amulets: amulet of flying and amulet of guarding.
- One new spellbook: spellbook of chain lightning.
- One new armor piece: helm of caution.
- Artifacts are made more difficult to obtain by sacrifice; each artifact requires a sacrifice of a certain minimum value.
- Unicorn horns no longer restore lost attributes.
- Dragon scale mail provides two extrinsics instead of one, providing a way to get some hard-to-get properties in the body armor slot.
- Blowing up a bag of holding will send most of its contents flying in random directions, rather than destroying them all. (1/13 of those items will still be destroyed, as well as any fragile items.)
- You can apply royal jelly to an egg to revive it and potentially make it see you as its parent when it hatches.
- Crystal balls can be used to find dungeon features, are less likely to fail if they are blessed or your own quest artifact, receive more charges when being charged, generate with slightly more charges, and implode if used when cancelled.
- The light radius from a stack of candles equals the square root of the number of candles.
- Spellbooks can be applied to determine how many uses they have left in them.
- You can sometimes get enlightenment from drinking a potion of hallucination.
- Reading a scroll of light while confused will conjure tame, cancelled lights.
- A blessed scroll of teleportation gives you teleport control on the teleport you get by reading it.
- Wearing a wet towel reduces damage from a poison cloud, and blocks vapors from potions.
- The scroll of scare monster no longer works on any @ or unique monster.
- Alchemy works less efficiently when potions are diluted.
- Demonbane is now a mace. Angelic beings can generate with a mace so they may still appear with it.
- The wand of speed monster no longer grants permanent speed, but instead grants temporary very fast speed. The potion of speed can still grant intrinsic speed, but in fewer circumstances.
- The wand of make invisible no longer grants permanent intrinsic invisibility.
- The potion of polymorph, when blessed, grants control over the polymorph when you quaff it.
- The amulet of restful sleep causes you to regain hit points much faster while asleep than normal.
- The ring of aggravate monster increases the level difficulty by 15, causing much tougher monsters to generate.
Role changes
- A few roles have special new methods of gaining experience.
- Archeologists' fedora is lucky.
- Obtaining Excalibur via dipping in a fountain is much less likely for non-Knights, and practically more difficult for Valkyries, who no longer start the game with a long sword.
- Wizards no longer have a Luck based bonus for writing unknown spellbooks; instead, they automatically learn the appearances of books as they advance their skills in spell schools.
Other
- A wide array of accessibility improvements, mostly along the lines of messages, options, and commands that precisely describe where things are happening on the map and what monsters they are happening to.
- Amnesia no longer causes you to forget maps and object identities. It instead makes you forget skill training and spells.
- The mysterious force hits a character less often as the total number of levels they've been sent back by the force increases.
- Sources of poison no longer have a chance of instakilling the player (but can still often remove a large amount of hit points at once).
- New conducts: pauper, permadeaf, petless, and no rule breaking in Sokoban.
- Anti-magic fields are much deadlier to characters with magic resistance.
- Some magical traps explode when destroyed and can be destroyed from a distance by zapping cancellation at them.
- The map can be configured to draw its symbols from Unicode.
- Item destruction from elemental sources can be mostly prevented by having the extrinsic resistance to that element or by wearing a dwarvish cloak; failing any external protection, weaker attacks don't destroy as many items as stronger ones.
- Engravings are now visible on the map from a distance.
- Natural hit point recovery is reduced at higher levels.
- Luck gains from sacrificing are limited by the value of the monster sacrificed, meaning you can't max out your luck by sacrificing a lot of low-difficulty monsters.
- Gehennom levels (and the Plane of Fire) are "hot", which can automatically destroy potions dropped onto the ground.

The initial pet is a little dog for Cavemen, Rangers, and Samurai, a kitten for Wizards, a saddled pony for Knights, and a random choice of a kitten or little dog for all others (or the user's choice in his options).
Dungeon features
The main trunk of the dungeon begins at level 1, where the game begins, and proceeds down stairs to Medusa's Lair and the Castle. From there, it is necessary to enter a trap door to the Valley of the Dead. Further stairs down eventually lead to the invocation level. Performing the invocation ritual at the vibrating square opens the stairs to the Sanctum.
With the Amulet of Yendor in hand, the adventurer may ascend from level 1 into the Plane of Earth; thence s/he may proceed through magic portals to the planes of Air, Fire, and Water, and thence to the Astral Plane. Offering the Amulet of Yendor on the correct high altar wins the game.
Along the way, one will encounter these branches and special levels:
- A second staircase to the Gnomish Mines. Therein, one will find Mine Town and, at the end, the bottom level with a luckstone.
- The Oracle level.
- An upward staircase to Sokoban.
- A possible Bigroom.
- The Rogue level.
- The magic portal to the Quest.
- A possible magic portal, inside a vault, to Fort Ludios.
- Medusa's Lair.
- The Castle.
- The Valley of the Dead. Gehennom begins here, and it is no longer safe to pray.
- The lairs of Asmodeus, Juiblex, Baalzebub, and Orcus.
- A second upward staircase to Vlad's Tower.
- The Wizard's Tower; it is visible but not accessible from here.
- A Fake Tower containing a random Amulet.
- A Fake Tower containing a magic portal by which the Wizard's Tower may be entered.
To win the game, it is necessary to complete these tasks:
- Gather seven candles, possibly in Izchak's lighting shop in Mine Town.
- Complete the Quest and get the Bell of Opening.
- Obtain the Candelabrum of Invocation from Vlad the Impaler.
- Obtain the Book of the Dead from the Wizard of Yendor.
- Proceed to the vibrating square and perform the invocation ritual.
- Obtain the Amulet of Yendor from the high priest of Moloch.
- Escape from the dungeon with it.
